Lotus Pose (Padmasana) at Anand Yoga Centre

Padmasana, or Lotus Pose, is a cross-legged meditation seat where each foot rests on the opposite thigh and the knees settle toward the floor. It opens the hips and ankles and gives a stable, grounded base for breathing and meditation. It calls for deep external hip rotation, so it is best built slowly over time. Many find it a calm, upright seat for stillness, women-first, in Kolathur.

How to do it

How to do Lotus Pose, step by step

  1. 1
    Set up

Sit in Staff Pose with your legs extended and spine tall, then bend your right knee and rotate the thigh open from the hip.

    Inhale
  2. 2
    Place the first foot

Guide your right foot to rest on the left thigh, sole turned up, heel drawing gently toward the lower belly, without forcing the knee.

    Exhale
  3. 3
    Place the second foot

Bend your left knee and cradle the left foot onto the right thigh so both knees ease toward the floor; lengthen the spine and rest your hands on your knees.

    Exhale
  4. 4
    Release

Gently unfold one leg at a time back to Staff Pose, bounce the knees softly, and swap the crossing of the legs on your next round.

    Exhale

The breath leads the movement: inhale as you open and lift, exhale as you fold and lower. One full round repeats the sequence leading with the other leg.

Questions

Lotus Pose: common questions

Is Padmasana good for beginners?
Full Padmasana is best treated as an intermediate pose, because it needs deep external rotation in both hips. Beginners are better served by Ardha Padmasana (Half Lotus) or Easy Pose first. With patient hip-opening practice over weeks and months, many work toward full Lotus safely and comfortably.
How do I protect my knees in Lotus Pose?
The rotation for Lotus should come from the hips, never the knees. Open the hip and ankle first, guide the foot in slowly, and never press a knee down. If a knee lifts or pinches, sit higher on a cushion, support the knee with a rolled blanket, or stay in Half Lotus.
What is the difference between Padmasana and Ardha Padmasana?
In full Padmasana both feet rest on the opposite thighs, while in Ardha Padmasana (Half Lotus) only one foot is on the opposite thigh and the other tucks beneath. Half Lotus is the recommended stepping stone, and many practitioners find it comfortable enough for daily meditation.
How long can I sit in Padmasana?
Begin with one to two minutes and build gradually. Once the hips are open and the seat feels steady, many practitioners sit for five minutes or longer for meditation. Switch which leg crosses on top between sessions, and come out if you feel any knee or ankle discomfort.
Can I do Padmasana with knee pain?
No, not while knees are painful. Lotus places real demand on the knees, so anyone with knee pain, injury, or recent surgery should avoid it and practise Easy Pose or sit on a chair instead. Build hip flexibility first and return only when cleared by your doctor or teacher.
