Thunderbolt Pose (Vajrasana) at Anand Yoga Centre

Vajrasana, or Thunderbolt Pose, is a simple kneeling seat where you sit back on your heels with a tall spine and hands resting on the thighs. It is one of the few poses traditionally practised just after a meal, and it stretches the thighs, ankles and feet while steadying the breath for meditation and pranayama. Many find it a calm, grounding base for daily practice, women-first, in Kolathur.

How to do it

How to do Thunderbolt Pose, step by step

  1. 1
    Set up

Kneel on a mat with your knees together and the tops of your feet flat on the floor, big toes touching and heels falling slightly apart.

    Exhale
  2. 2
    Sit back

Lower your hips back and down so they rest on your heels, with your thighs settling onto your calves and your weight even on both sit bones.

    Exhale
  3. 3
    Lengthen and settle

Rest your palms on your thighs, lengthen your spine, draw your shoulders down and back, and lift gently through the crown of your head.

    Inhale
  4. 4
    Release

Place your hands on the floor, lift your hips, extend one leg forward and then the other, and gently shake out your ankles.

    Exhale

The breath leads the movement: inhale as you open and lift, exhale as you fold and lower. One full round repeats the sequence leading with the other leg.

Questions

Thunderbolt Pose: common questions

Can we do Vajrasana after eating?
Yes. Vajrasana is one of the few yoga poses traditionally practised just after a meal. Sitting in this kneeling seat for a few minutes keeps the spine upright and many find it a comfortable way to settle after eating. Keep the hold gentle and stop if you feel any discomfort.
How long should I sit in Vajrasana?
Beginners can start with about 30 seconds to a minute and slowly build up. With practice, many sit comfortably for one to five minutes, and experienced practitioners hold it longer for meditation and pranayama. Always come out if your knees, ankles or feet begin to ache.
Why do my feet go numb in Vajrasana?
Numbness or tingling usually comes from pressure on the feet and reduced circulation during the hold. It is common and eases once you release. Coming out slowly, shaking out the ankles, and placing a folded blanket under the shins all help many practitioners stay comfortable for longer.
Is Vajrasana good for beginners?
Yes, Vajrasana is one of the most beginner-friendly seated poses because it needs no balance or deep flexibility. The main caution is knee and ankle comfort. Using a cushion between the hips and heels makes it accessible, and our women-first classes in Kolathur guide you on safe padding.
Can I do Vajrasana with knee pain?
Be cautious. If you have knee issues, recent leg surgery, or arthritis, place a bolster between your hips and heels to reduce the bend, or practise an upright seated version on a chair instead. Never force the knees, and check with your doctor or teacher before holding the pose.
