Yoga games turn poses and breathing into play, so children practise yoga without it ever feeling like a lesson. At Anand Yoga Centre in Kolathur we use games like Freeze Yoga, Yogi Says and Yoga Hopscotch, with some games made to wiggle out energy and others to help children settle and calm down. They are simple to play at home with one child or a whole group, and many children find them a joyful way to feel more relaxed.
Bouncy, giggly games for busy days and extra energy.
Play music and let everyone dance, then when it stops, freeze into a yoga pose like Tree or Star. A wiggle-out game that ends in lovely stillness.
Like Simon Says, but with poses. Call out 'Yogi says be a cobra' and children follow, giggling when a trick instruction slips in.
Draw a hopscotch grid with a pose in each square, so children hop, land and hold a shape. A fun mix of movement and balance.
Our gentle take on Duck-Duck-Goose. Children sit in a circle, and when tapped as 'Tree' they pop up into a wobbly Tree pose and chase around.
Quieter, cooperative games to bring the energy down and end on a peaceful note.
Everyone holds Downward Dog in a line to make a long tunnel, and one by one children crawl through. A happy, cooperative game that slows everyone down together.
Roll a pose dice or pull a Yoga Jenga block to pick the next gentle pose. Children love the surprise, and it naturally slows the pace.
Sit in a circle and pass a silly giggle from one child to the next. A calm, daft game that ends in soft smiles and slow breaths.
Clear a soft space with room to move, and keep landings gentle with no pushing. We play fun-first with no elimination and no shaming, so every child stays happy and included.
