Inversions For Beginners at Anand Yoga Centre, Kolathur

Being nervous about hanging upside down is completely normal, and at Anand Yoga Centre in Kolathur inversions are always optional and fully supported. You begin with the Cocoon, where the hammock cradles you with no weight on your head or neck, and you only invert further when you feel ready. With just four people in the room, Sailaja spots every inversion, and you can get a full class while staying close to the floor.

Why people fear it, and why aerial is gentler

The fear is normal, and the hammock changes the experience.

The fear is normal

Almost everyone feels nervous about going upside down at first, and that caution is healthy, not a problem.

The hammock holds you

Unlike a headstand on the mat, the fabric carries your weight, so there is little load on your neck and head.

You stay in control

Nothing happens quickly, you choose how far to go, and you can come up at any moment.

How we ease you in

Confidence is built one small step at a time.

Cocoon first

Your first inversion is the Cocoon, where the hammock wraps and cradles you with no weight on your head or neck, the safest place to start.

Always optional

You can stay grounded for the whole class and still get a complete, satisfying practice. Inverting is never required.

Spotted, only four in the room

With only four hammocks per class, Sailaja stands with you and spots every inversion, adjusting to your comfort.

Does it hurt, honestly

A straight answer so there are no surprises.

Some fabric pressure is normal

You may feel the hammock press where it wraps your body, which is normal and passes as you settle.

Brief head-pressure passes

A short, mild head-pressure can happen as blood shifts, and it eases quickly once you come back up.

Sharp pain is not normal

Sharp or strong pain is never expected, so you speak up straight away, and you always come up slowly.

Questions

Inversions For Beginners: common questions

Do I have to go upside down in aerial yoga?
No. Inversions are always optional and fully supported, and you can stay close to the floor for the entire class and still get a complete practice. Many beginners stay grounded for their first few classes. At Anand Yoga Centre, with only four hammocks per class, Sailaja adjusts everything to your comfort.
What is the safest first inversion for a beginner?
The Cocoon is the safest place to start, where the hammock wraps and cradles you with no weight on your head or neck. From there you only progress when you feel ready. Sailaja spots every inversion, and with just four people in the room you are never rushed.
Does hanging upside down hurt?
Some fabric pressure where the hammock wraps your body is normal, and a brief, mild head-pressure can happen as blood shifts, both of which pass quickly. Sharp or strong pain is not normal, so you speak up straight away and always come up slowly. Tell Sailaja about anything that does not feel right.
I am scared of going upside down. Is aerial yoga still for me?
Yes, and feeling nervous is completely normal. Because the hammock carries your weight and inversions are optional, you ease in at your own pace, starting with the gentle Cocoon. You stay in control the whole time and can come up whenever you wish.
Are there reasons I should not invert?
Yes. Please tell us before class if you have any eye condition such as glaucoma, high or unstable blood pressure, a heart condition, or a tendency to vertigo, as we will keep you upright. You can still enjoy a full grounded class. Read our safety page and message us on WhatsApp at +91 86101 62435 with any concern.
