Partner yoga poses are buddy shapes that two people make together, which makes them brilliant for siblings and parent-child play. At Anand Yoga Centre in Kolathur we teach gentle pairs like see-saw, partner tree and double boat that many children find build teamwork, trust and giggles, with no winning or losing. They are simple, safe and a lovely way to practise taking turns, where size truly does not matter.
Half the fun is choosing your buddy and inventing a silly team name before you start.
A brother, sister, friend, mum or dad all make wonderful partners. Size does not matter, only working together does.
Be the Wobbly Trees or the Giggly Boats. A team name turns two yogis into one happy little crew.
Whatever one buddy does, the other gets a turn too. Taking turns keeps it fair, kind and full of fun.
Start at level one and only move up when both buddies feel ready and happy.
Sit facing your buddy, hold hands and gently rock back and forth like a see-saw in the park. A lovely warm-up for taking turns.
Stand side by side, link arms, and each lift the outside foot into a tree. Together you make one strong tree in the raindrops.
See the pose →Sit facing each other, hold hands, press the soles of your feet together and lift your legs to make a wobbly double boat.
See the pose →One buddy makes downward dog, and the taller buddy rests their feet up on the lower back to make a double dog. Always with a grown-up watching.
See the pose →Stand close, wrap your nearest arms around each other's backs, and both lift into a tree. Wobble, giggle and grow tall together.
Keep partner poses gentle and chatty, communicate and take turns, and never put weight on a buddy's back or neck. A grown-up shows each pose first and stays close. It is a joyful teamwork game, never a contest.
