Yoga for beginners means starting with the breath and a handful of simple postures, then building slowly as your body learns the movements. You do not need to be flexible, fit or young to begin. The honest goal in your first weeks is steady breathing, basic alignment and showing up regularly. At Anand Yoga Centre in Kolathur, north Chennai, beginners learn in small, women-first batches at their own pace, guided by founder Sailaja Anand. First class is ₹199.

What a beginner actually needs to know

Flexibility comes later

You start where your body is today. Flexibility is a result of regular practice, not a requirement to begin it.

Breath leads movement

Learning to breathe slowly and steadily is the real first skill, and it makes every pose feel more settled.

Consistency beats intensity

Three calm sessions a week do far more for a beginner than one exhausting class you dread repeating.

Rest is part of practice

Pausing in a resting pose when you need to is normal and encouraged, never a sign of failing.

Good first poses to learn

These are gentle, foundational shapes most beginners can approach.

Surya Namaskar

The sun salutation, taught step by step, is a complete warm-up and a great daily habit.

Questions

Yoga for Beginners: common questions

I am not flexible at all. Can I still do yoga?
Yes, and most beginners are not flexible when they start. Flexibility develops gradually as you practise. In our beginner batches, Sailaja adjusts every pose to your current range, so you work within what feels safe and improve slowly over weeks rather than forcing anything.
How many times a week should a beginner practise?
Two to three sessions a week is a comfortable, sustainable start for most beginners. Regular, gentle practice builds the habit and the body memory faster than occasional intense sessions. Our ₹2,000 monthly plan gives unlimited classes so you can find a rhythm that fits your week.
Will I be the only beginner in the class?
No. We regularly welcome complete beginners, and our batches stay small so no one feels lost. Being women-first, the room is calm and patient, which many new students find makes their first few weeks far less intimidating.
What should I bring to my first yoga class?
Comfortable clothes you can stretch in, water, and an open mind. Mats are available at the studio. Try not to eat a heavy meal in the hour or two before practice, and arrive a little early so Sailaja can settle you in.
Is yoga safe if I have a health condition?
Yoga can often be practised gently with the right guidance, but it is not a treatment or cure, and you should check with your doctor about your specific condition first. Tell Sailaja before class so poses can be kept safe and suitable for you.
