Your First Aerial Class at Anand Yoga Centre, Kolathur

In your first aerial yoga class the hammock does the heavy lifting, so you spend the hour supported, not balancing. At Anand Yoga Centre in Kolathur you arrive a few minutes early, the hammock is set to your height, and you move from gentle warm-ups to simple supported poses, an optional inversion, and a floating rest. With only four people in the room, Sailaja guides every step.

What happens, start to finish

A typical first class runs about an hour and never rushes you.

Arrive and set up

Come five to ten minutes early so the hammock can be set to your height and you can tell Sailaja about any health considerations.

Warm up on the floor

You begin with gentle mat warm-ups, then get used to the fabric taking a little of your weight.

Supported poses

You move through simple poses where the hammock holds part of you, staying close to the floor the whole time.

Float and rest

An optional gentle inversion if you feel ready, then a cradled floating savasana to finish.

How to prepare

Eat light

Avoid heavy meals for about two hours before, since inversions on a full stomach can feel uncomfortable.

Wear the right clothes

Fitted clothing that covers the backs of the knees and underarms, so the fabric does not pinch.

Questions

Your First Aerial Class: common questions

Do I need to be fit or flexible for my first aerial class?
No. The hammock supports part of your body weight, so you do not need strength or flexibility to begin. At Anand Yoga Centre every aerial class is capped at four hammocks, so Sailaja can adjust each pose to your body and keep you comfortable.
Will I have to go upside down on the first day?
Only if you want to. Inversions are always optional and fully supported, and many beginners stay close to the floor for the first few classes. You still get a complete, satisfying class without inverting.
How long is an aerial yoga class?
A class runs about an hour, including a gentle warm-up and a floating rest at the end. Arrive five to ten minutes early so your hammock can be set to your height.
What if I feel dizzy?
Mild head-pressure can happen briefly in or after an inversion, so you always come up slowly and tell the teacher. With only four people in the room, Sailaja is watching the whole time and will adjust or pause with you.
